The sudden shifts in rainfall are causing atmospheric lids, preventing rain clouds from forming and turning ambient humidity into oppressive heat. Cities like Bengaluru have recorded their hottest July days in over a century, with daytime temperatures soaring 3-5 degrees Celsius above normal.

"El Niño creates more breaks in the monsoon, leading to longer hot periods," Murtugudde adds. "It's like a popcorn kettle—when it gets very warm, the kernels pop unpredictably, making long-range forecasting extremely challenging."

As the monsoon season progresses, it remains uncertain whether rainfall will normalize. While the India Meteorological Department predicts total seasonal rainfall to be around 94% of the long-term average, private meteorologists warn of wider deficits in precipitation during the second half of the monsoon.
