Wind farms are a crucial component of Australia's renewable energy mix, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat global warming. However, the tragic deaths of native birds, such as the Wedge-tailed Eagle, at wind farms cannot be overlooked. These incidents, like the ones at the Rye Park Wind Farm, highlight the need for a more comprehensive approach to wind farm development and operation. While the deaths of birds are often seen as collateral damage, they are a significant concern that requires immediate attention. The Wedge-tailed Eagle, an iconic symbol of the Australian bush, has endured persecution and is often targeted by farmers. This raises a deeper question: how can we balance the need for renewable energy with the preservation of our native wildlife? The good news is that there are strategies and technologies available to mitigate bird strikes. These include siting turbines in low-risk areas, clearing surrounding areas of potential hazards, and implementing automated curtailment systems. For instance, a camera system integrated with AI can detect objects and trigger the cessation of turning blades, while devices that emit audible or visual stimuli can deter birds and bats. Painting turbine towers and blades can also make them more visible, reducing death rates by up to 70%. However, what is missing is a national or state framework for wind farm operators. While individual operators like Tilt Renewables have developed mitigation plans, it is not enough for them to respond in an ad hoc way. There needs to be standard mitigation practices for every wind farm as part of the development approval process. The backlash against renewable energy projects in some quarters of the bush means that companies need to establish not only the public benefit of the green power they produce but also negotiate a social contract. This includes ensuring that iconic native wildlife is not needlessly harmed. In my opinion, the strategies and technologies are available to prevent these environmental tragedies. It is time for the government, the industry, and experts to come together and ensure that they are implemented. Only then can we truly balance the need for renewable energy with the preservation of our native wildlife.
